Ideas Of India 3.0: On Day 2, watch your idols and stalwarts from various segments of society delve into 'The People's Agenda' in a series of star-studded sessions at ABP Network's flagship event.
The curtain falls on the ABP Network's Ideas Of India Summit 3.0 as the two-day event concludes. Throughout the summit, eminent personalities shared their insights and perspectives on 'The People's Agenda,' the theme selected for this year.
Following the success of the prior two editions, themed 'Naya India' and 'Open-Minds Open Minds,' the third edition has further delved into the exploration of ideas and concepts that contribute to shaping India's future.
"I think that the things that happened to you when you are young person. They are very difficult. But when I look back at my life, I thank those bullies because it was a great training ground. They help me develop a thick skin. When you are a women, especially a brown women, the first thing you need is a really thick skin," Padma Lakshmi said while speaking on racism in the US.
"My grandfather lived in Delhi and so my mother went there to have me. For the first four years of my life, I lived in Moti Bagh, I was born in Safdarjung. I love going back to Delhi, it has the best 'chaat,' Bengali Market," Padma Lakshmi said on her birth in New Delhi.
"I hope you enjoyed the sessions. It has been fantastic tour till here. We have heard from scientists, actors, writes, movie directors, politicians, scholars and entrepreneurs. We have heard many Ideas of India, we have heard history as a battlefield, India as a global giant, Ram as a civilisational ideal and politicisation of religion," CEO Avinash Pandey said in the vote of thanks.
"When new alliances are formed, you collapse government using ED, IT and CBI. I call them extended departments of BJP. If you look at the investigations, around 97% of them are from the opposition. Ashok Chavan gets clean chit. He was in the Congress party in 40 years. The person whom you are accusing of Adarsh Scam, the same person becomes your Rajya Sabha nominee within 24 hours," Priyanka Chaturvedi said.
"The country has witnessed times when popular Prime Ministers have been defeated. Indira Gandhi lost after Emergency and Atal Bihar Vajpayee after India Shining," Priyanka Chaturvedi said.
"BJP is winning because the party is working according to the wishes of the people. Everything is all about trust. We are moving ahead with safety, security and stability. So, this is Modi's guarantee. 25 crore poor have gone up the poverty line, 50 crore people have bank accounts, Article 370 and Lord Ram's Temple which is associated to our beliefs," Poonam Mahajan explained why BJP is winning elections.
Poonam Mahajan Said, "First of all Modi ki guarantee. The guarantee which is tried and tested and succeeded for the past 10 years. So that is what people want to support. 25 crore people have come up from poverty, women getting money from Direct Benefit Transfer and with Article 370, India is together."
"It is a capitalist world. Ideals are churned out so that certain sales can be made. Let this awareness guide you and not make you feel small," Sobhita Dhulipala shares message for individuals feeling 'inadequate'.
Actor Sobhita Dhulipala says: "I was a geeky kid... I still am geeky. As a child, I was really shy; I was timid. I wanted to mingle, but I didn't have the confidence... So I formed a connection with books, crafts, and things that didn't require social interaction."
"Covid changed people a lot. People consumed more OTT content at home as there were no cinemas. Covid taught us to consume a lot of stuff online. Maybe the audience's mindset changed as the films that came out were different and there was a lot of different kind of storytelling. However, the charm of going to theatres with family started returning slowly... and a lot of smaller films made Rs 80-90 crore. People are coming back now with the hope that this is where their joy lies. I am very optimistic about theatres," Kareena Kapoor Khan on OTT vs theatre experience.

Ila Arun said: "I did a song 'Kuch bhi bolo magar prem se'. The only message is that we spread trust amongst people so that they can exercise their right to express themselves freely. It is tremendously important to establish a trust factor to ensure a sense of unity among people living in a diverse country like ours".
Speaking about one of the successful ads for Fevicol India, Piyush said: "I chose a guy for the role of a carpenter who had a backstory on his face. I watched an ad for a paint company where a painter came to paint in a dangri and he was the same face modeling for a better brand. It is not what people are used to seeing, and something common people would not relate to. So, I keep on testing for people who can fit in the ad and justify the concept, so that people can connect better."
Remembering how folk music started in Bollywood, with one of the first songs "Morni Bagha Mein", and "Choli ke Peeche" songs, Ila Arun said: "I have been always called for folk songs. I have had opportunities to represent my folk music and songs. It should be noted that folk is going to stay because it comes from the bottom of the strata. Mainstream can add things to its content as per its requirements and needs, but folk is different. It is an expression of society".
Talking about folk and theatre, Ila said, "It is an expression. I can say and express myself at my best when am on stage. Theatre meri zindagi hai (Theatre is my life)".
Ila Arun was brought up in the state of Rajasthan, Jaipur, and has been associated with the folk culture. Emphasising her stance that "one should be connected to his/her roots," She said: "Whatever I am today is because of my culture. I have respected whatever I have learnt from my culture. It is only the rich, diverse culture of my state that I have represented across the country and the world".
Talking about how Piyush, Prasoon, Ila gained their "individual identities" coming from a joint family. Piyush Pandey said that "art is collective". The diversity gave them perspectives and exposure. "And such contributions should be respected because if you stop respecting people for making you learn different things, they will stop talking and sharing their experiences with you," Piyush said.
Ila Arun said that her idea of India is "Ekta Mein Anekta". She opined that having a strong hold over our roots can help us develop a stronger Idea of our India.
While describing his idea of India, Prasoon Pandey, Director Of Advertising Films, said: "We have to cultivate the idea of India, because I doubt if any other country has this rich culture".
When asked what is your Idea of India, Piyush Pandey, CEO of Ogilvy, said that "India is an idea".
"Maharashtra was betrayed. People voted for a particular party, but power went to some other party... Operation Lotus turned electoral politics into a stock exchange of MLAs. It is a mockery of democracy," says Sanjay Jha.
Sanjay Jha says the elections in 2024 will depend on Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, UP, and Karnataka. "Congress has to do the heavy lifting. Congress has the momentum on its side," he says.
Columnist Sanjay Jha says: "This government has got no chance of coming back to power in 2024 if public votes on the basis of hard statistics of socio-economics." Sanjay Jha agrees that the Congress has failed to grasp the pulse of the voter. "Had BJP been in the Opposition today and these issues existed, BJP would have handed a thumping defeat with 100 seats to the Congress," he says.
C-Voter founder Yashwant Deshmukh says: "In 2019, BJP polled 37% of the votes. Congress fell short by 17%, polling just 20% of the votes. The baseline fell to record a 21% deficit from 1999 for Congress. In 1999, when Vajpayee became the PM, Congress got 4% votes more than the BJP. This swing in the baseline is what is giving the BJP confidence."
Sanjay Kumar says the BJP is comfortably placed in this election. "But it wants to reach that 400-seat target. Hence, it is counting every seat and taking back leaders, like Nitish Kumar, into its fold," he says.
"BJP will have to fight hard in Karnataka to reach its previous Lok Sabha poll tally of 352," says Pradeep Gupta.
"Four states -- Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra, and Punjab -- have 100 seats between them. However, the NDA won just 5 seats in these states last time. The elbow room for NDA is the highest in these states," Pradeep Gupta explains the maths behind BJP's 'Abki baar 400 paar' call.

"Any development needs sustainability. Charity cannot sustain itself. Bandhan Bank conducts business in a sustainable way. Whenever we get surplus funds, we give them out for CSR activities. We do it in a bigger way compared to other banks," says CS Ghosh on Bandhan Bank enabling people.
"Some people are intentionally duplicating Aadhaar and other documents. There is a back-end system at Bandhan Bank to identify such duplication. If such a case is detected, the person will be denied an account. But most of our customers are loyal and honest," says CS Ghosh.
"Bandhan Bank started as an NGO based on trust in women. We started by giving loans to women to enable them to earn, empowring them and create employment. We identified that women from low-income strata did not have access to finance... That's why we gave them small loans so that they are empowered," says Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, Bandhan Bank MD and CEO. "They were loyal and we got back 99% of the loans we gave out," he adds.
Vinay Sitapati said: "The kind of government former PM Narasimha Rao ran in the parliament back then was a very different situation. It is a mistake that the Congress didn't give him a Bharat Ranta, and the BJP did."
Vinay Sitapati said: "Whether you are right or left, has to be seen from the Indian relaties. Your idea of what constitutes India determines your political alignment."
Vinay Sitapati said: "There's a difference between Indira Gandhi and PM Modi. Both leaders have been immensely popular. Indira broke up with the syndicate and formed another party. Indira made herself bigger than the party. PM Modi has a bigger name than his party, but instead, he is making his cadre strong. This means even after Modi, the BJP and his cadre remain."
Vinay Sitapati said: "The scale of growth in India in the last decade is very evident. There's a general story about the modernisation of the country. It is to be noted that the growth is not only in BJP-ruled states, other states have contributed to this modernisation story, but PM Modi is the only genius who says it is only one person, one party who has done all the work."
Answering whether BJP's model is "welfare wrapped in Hindutva", Sitapati said that: "The lifestyle of people has been better recently. It is to be noted that the BJP voters get the message that 'things are getting better'. The voters also get a spiritual message apart from a material message. The point is that it is not always the 'material message' but a 'feeling', a psychological message that the govt has been able to send to its voters."
Vinay Sitapati, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Legal Studies at Ashoka University, said that data says out loud that India is very religious. Indian politics is a reflection of Indian society. Indian society is derived from what religion people and a group of people are following. Identity and identity politics comprise these components.
Speaking about the "failure of abrogation of Article 370", Omar Abdullah said that it has been five years since the special status given to J&K has been taken away, still there has been no election there.
Speaking on the issues that are in Jammu and Kashmir, former CM Omar Abdullah said: "These problems are not a product of two families of the valley (Abdullah and Mufti Family). Militancy and terrorism are not products of these families, but are a product of Pakistan."
"J&K has been denied its own elected government since 2018. We have not had a single assembly election since 2014. Please tell me if everything is really hunky dory, it is peaceful... why have we not had an assembly election? Everything the BJP had to do to win an election, they had done... Despite that, you are not having assembly elections in J&K," says Omar Abdullah.
"J&K is relatively calm now. It's no secret there are no street protests... The belief that Article 370 was the cause of J&K's problems, is not true. When It was abrogated it was said that terrorism, separatism, the seeming lack of development was due to Article 370. But we will be reaching the 5th anniversary of the abrogation. Pockets of separatists still exist. Nearly every week, a terror attack is reported. Areas that were free of terror, like Rajouri and Poonch, are now seeing militant attacks. There was no attack on minorities when I was the CM. Today, that is a regular occurrence. Kashmiri Pandits who had resettled in Kashmir with government jobs and other packages are now screaming to be allowed to leave and move back to Jammu," says Omar Abdullah.
"I did not do anybody any favour [during my stint as the External Affairs Minister]. It was my job. This is the country I was born in. This is the soil I will be buried in," says Omar Abdullah.
"The day before, tourists were asked to vacate J&K. The government claimed threat to the Amarnath Yatra. And then telephone connectivity went down. In the past, whenever mobile phones went down, fixed lines functioned. But the next morning even internet and fixed lines went down," says Omar Abdullah. He says his house was illegally locked from outside. "They detained me saying that I was a threat to peace. Six months later, they detained me under the Public Safety Act, because I opposed separatists. I was detained for making elections in India a success by actively campaigning against Pakistan's election boycott call," says Omar Abdullah.
Former J&K CM Omar Abdullah says he did not expect Article 370 was going to be abrogated till it actually happened. He says: "Then Governor had assured us that there was no plan to scrap the Constitutional status of J&K. So, it was not expected."
"India has always been a very religious country, which is why I argue we should not be confronting the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and the revival of Hindu fundamentalism. We should not be contesting as godless secularists. We should be contesting from within the prism of religion," says Shashi Tharoor.
"I am a proud Hindu. As a Hindu, I grew up believing passionately in precisely the Hindu acceptance of difference that makes the difference between Hinduism and other faiths...," says Shashi Tharoor on a multi-faith idea of India.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor describes evolution of Indian nationalism, saying: "Our nationalism grew up initially as an anti-colonial nationalism in opposition to British imperialism. When British withdrew, India was divided. For most countries that were divided, it was a question of communism and capitalism in the two halves... For India the question was should religion be the determinant of court nationhood. And the Pakistanis created a nation on the basis that it was." "Mahatma Gandhi, Ambedkar and others thrashed it out. They answered the question 'If Pakistan is created for Muslims, why can't we create a country for Hindus', by saying: 'This is the logic that divided the country, we will not buy into it," Tharoor says.
"Free Trade Agreement with the UK may happen before the elections... Another FTA with the EU could be signed within 3-4 years," says Arvind Panagriya.
"It's nonsensical for anybody to say that you can grow the economy on services alone. No country has grown without manufacturing," says Arvind Panagariya.
"If you look at the labour force survey [Periodic Labour Force Survey], the unemployment rates are not very high... On an aggregate, India's unemployment has been around 3-4%. Unemployment is not India's problem, it's under employment. Productivity is low. That is where the real challenge lies — generating well-paid, high-productivity jobs," says Arvind Panagariya.
Ideas Of India 3.0 — Finance Commission chairman Arvind Panagariya says India has moved a long way since the 1980s and the outlook is optimistic. India's growth has been nearly 8% in real Rupees.

"If you look at the inflation in the US and other nations, education and healthcare costs are the largest. The year-on-year costs keep rising. The more developed a nation gets, the higher the costs rise," says Shashank ND. "In India, there is a trust gap. We go to a doctor directly instead of through an insurance company... because the quality of healthcare in India varies a lot. It can be very good or very bad. It's ok to pay more but not take poor quality healthcare... So, our trust goes to a few brands and our healthcare spends go to these few players. So, we need to think how to reduce this monopoly," Shashank ND says.
Practo founder Shashank ND reveals he was inspired to establish Practo Health after he found out that affordable healthcare was not accessible to everyone. "My father needed a knee surgery. The doctor gave me a printout of my father's report. But I asked him to send it to me via mail. But he only had the option to print as the software on his iMac did not have an email... So, I made a software that allowed doctors to send mails and gave it to the doctor. He paid me for it," Shashank ND talks about the start of Practo Health.
"I didn't know maths, science, English, public speaking. I drove tempo, worked at a library as a peon, I worked at a grinding mill and made flour, worked as a dog walker by the hour...," Manoj Kumar Sharma talks about his struggle in life.
"I couldn't pass Class 12 as I couldn't cheat. At that time teachers used to write the answers on the board. But that year, one examination officer had vowed to not give room to cheating. He came to our school and sat there and there was no cheating... I wondered who is this person who actually was setting the system straight. I wondered why could I not become like that. That inspired me to work hard and abandon the practice of cheating," IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma talks about his motivation.

Actor Tamannah talks about 'gamechanger' 'Baahubali' and her preference for movie industries. "Baahubali was a big revelation for me as an actor... It changed the way people view Indian cinema today. It gave me the opportunity to play a character I could not pick a reference from anywhere. That's when I realised I had so much scope as an actor. It's true that it takes another person to discover your strengths. For me, it was SS Rajamouli... There was a strength in me that I did not know was in me."
"The constitution is not a socialist document. We have the right to do business, we have a truncated form of right to property... we require political parties to take an oath by the Constitution and yet the party may be capitalist as it is part of free speech... to dictate a particular form economic philosophy, which the Constitution itself doesn't mandate, there I have a problem. But I don't think it is for the court to strike down the words secular and socialist that were added to the preamble later," says Saurabh Kirpal on Subramanian Swamy's plea to remove the two words.
Gopal Sankaranarayanan says: "Umar Khalid's bail was pending before the SC for three years... The media reported the court was adjourning the matter but it was his lawyers who allowed the case to drag on for three years. Bail SLPs are disposed of in SC in 2-3 months. But 2 weeks ago they withdrew the petition. Then don't blame the courts. Courts make mistakes as well, but don't attack courts accusing it as an arm of the government."
"Law and politics are intimately connected. It is inevitable and necessary. Law has no inner morality in itself... If the law follows the politics of the majority, the politics of the minority will always think that the law is a tool for oppression... Then there is a tension between law and politics which doesn't innately exist, but because of certain beliefs.... We have always lived in those times because politics will always differ in such a huge country as there will be differences. As long as differences exist, law will inevitably favour one or the other side," says Saurabh Kirpal, author and senior advocate, Delhi High Court.
"Over the last 15-20 years, there has been a change in [terms of] welfare legislations... I have seen that not being carried forward. I have seen a harsher hue, with reference to civil liberties, the ED and its powers... I haven't found any welfare legislation in the last 10 years. But I would find UCC in Chhattisgarh, PMLA, etc which takes care of smaller contingents of people and their interests. But something that is available to the entire country, with reference to health, education, etc, I don't find that," says Gopal Sankaranarayanan, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India.
The Congress don't want us to question the cultural imperialism of the Mughal Empire. They were also oppressors of a different kind than the British... To even talk about these aspects of our past gets you painted as a communal and a bigoted person, which is a problem," says Vikram Sampath.
"To rubbish away the palpable change in India today to just a political project linked to an ideology or party, would be missing the point. We just saw that during the Ram Mandir consecration ceremony in India, common Indians, who had nothing to do with the BJP, RSS, VHP, felt that this was a renaissance and resurgence when after 500 years of struggle, we got back one of our most sacred spots," says Vikram Sampath.
"What we see today, the so-called recasting of a 're-imagined India', is a repurposed narrative from those [colonial] times that India belongs to certain people who worship in a certain way, speak a certain language, follow a certain religion... as opposed to an enlightened narrative or imagination in line with the forward movement of history. India belongs to everybody who is here every citizen and citizenship is not related to language or region or religion... whoever is in India is an Indian," says Parakala Prabhakar.

"There are many aspects of history that cannot be condoned and must be condemned. But if we look at the present and the future, India is a great example of a country where self-governance has been a great success and post-Empire, India has embraced everything that was left and excelled beyond expectations. Looking at the Commonwealth, this has been a great relationship and a great community of nations which have historic link and can work collaboratively for the future. I still maintain a 'proud child of the Empire'," says Suella Braverman on British atrocities in India before Independence.
"The UK has an enviable record of welcoming millions of people over decades... But if you look at the levels of migration today, they are simply unsustainable... Last year, net legal migration into the UK stood at 700,000. That's an increase from 240,000 from 2019. Such numbers are not sustainable considering the UK's finite resources. Our resources are under strain due to rapid population increase, which includes migration," says Suella Braverman.
"Unprecedented illegal migration is a pressing challenge in the UK... Illegal immigrants undermine our border security. British people are frustrated with what they see on our southern border. It's a recent occurrence...post-Brexit. This is something the government must fix. PM Rishi is committed fixing it and I share the commitment... It's a humanitarian challenge," says Suella Braverman.
"There are opportunities for both India and the UK to collaborate and work together on the world stage. That is why the post-Brexit UK heralds a great opportunity for a UK-India trade deal, the works for both our nations to double the trade to potentially 86 billion pounds, doubling your exports and increasing UK investments in India, particularly in sectors like infrastructure like infrastructure, renewable energy, healthcare, and education... I believe both nations can secure a mutually beneficial trade deal," says Suella Braverman.
