Maintain A Balanced Diet
Eating a clean, healthy, nutritious, and well-balanced diet is instrumental role in improving the quality of eggs and sperm. So, include more green leafy vegetables, whole grains, legumes, lentils, berries, eggs, milk, yoghurt, tomatoes, bananas, salmon, and sardines in the diet. Additionally, drinking adequate water is important for the optimal functioning of ovaries. One must strictly stay away from foods and beverages that are highly processed and have high sugar content. Even caffeine intake should be limited to 1-2 cups per day.
Regular Exercising And Weight Management
Both being overweight or underweight can negatively affect fertility and decrease the chances of conceiving through IVF. Before undergoing the process, it is recommended to maintain a healthy weight according to the BMI range by eating right and exercising regularly. Including light physical activities such as walking, jogging, yoga, and others in the daily routine will help maintain a healthy body weight and improve overall well-being. Avoid strenuous activities as they may put unnecessary stress on the body.
Avoid Smoking And Alcohol Intake
Smoking and alcohol intake can both reduce the quality and quantity of sperm and damage their DNA, thereby reducing the chances of IVF success. These unhealthy lifestyle choices do not only affect men; they can also reduce fertility in women. They can decrease endometrial thickness, thereby reducing pregnancy chances and increasing the risk of implantation failure.
Get Enough Sleep
Getting an adequate amount of quality sleep rejuvenates organs and various metabolic processes in the body. Couples opting for IVF are advised to get 7-8 hours of proper rest. To ensure sound sleep at night, refrain from eating 2-3 hours before bed and avoid drinking caffeine 4-6 hours before bedtime. Those dealing with stress can take a cold shower, engage in singing, light yoga, and meditation, and connect with family and friends to reduce stress levels and relax their minds for a peaceful sleep at night.
Include Supplements
Folic acid and vitamin D are two essential nutrients that play crucial roles in female reproductive health. Start taking these supplements 2-3 months before the procedure to increase the chances of getting pregnant and continue them throughout the pregnancy journey. Folic acid promotes embryonic health, prevents brain damage and spinal abnormalities, and aids in pregnancy, while vitamin D increases the rates of live births. Include these supplements after consulting the doctor.
Apart from all these, men are also recommended to avoid hotter environments, such as placing laptops on their laps, as increased scrotal temperature can affect sperm quality. IVF may seem like a daunting process, but one can navigate the journey with the right guidance and support.
