Kolkata: Neil O'Brien, credited with pioneering quizzing in the country, passed away here on Friday, his son and Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien said.

The 82-year-old former Lok Sabha and West Bengal assembly member is survived by his wife and three sons. "Saddest tweet I've ever written. Dad Neil O'Brien gone. Passed at home Kolkata, quiz pioneer, ex-ICSE chief, AI (Anglo-Indian) community icon, educationist," Derek O'Brien tweeted. Neil O'Brien had conducted the first well-organized, formal quiz in 1967 at Christ the King Church Parish Hall in then Calcutta (now Kolkata). He was also a former chairman of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination and the Inter State Board of Anglo-Indian Education.
