Kejriwal Proposes 50% Metro Fare Exemption, Free Bus Rides For Students In Letter To PM Modi

Arvind Kejriwal has requested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi provide a 50% discount on metro fares for school and college students, with the Delhi and Central governments sharing the cost equally.

Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal 50 per cent reduction in metro fare for school and college students in the national capital in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

The former Delhi CM proposed a 50:50 plan under which half of the expense would be borne by the Delhi government and the other half by the Central government. 

He also proposed free bus rides for the students the expenses of which will be fully borne by the Delhi government. 

"To reduce the financial burden of students, I propose to provide 50% concession to students in Delhi Metro," Kejriwal said in the letter. "Delhi Metro is a 50:50 collaboration project between the Delhi government and the Central government. Therefore, the expenditure on this should be borne half and half by the Delhi government and Central government," he added. 

"From our side, we are planning to make bus travel completely free for students," said the AAP chief in the letter.

Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal said a large number of students use the metro in Delhi, which has become expensive. 

"A common student faces a lot of problems in commuting...Metro is the 50-50 venture of the Delhi government and the Central government," he said. 

"This is an issue of public interest, there is no politics in it. I hope the PM will accept this...Post-election, travel for all students in Delhi buses will be free. We will provide a 50% concession in metro fares for all Delhi students," Kejriwal said.
