IIT Delhi, Bombay Score In Top 150 QS World University Rankings 2026, More Indian Institutes Enter List
India boasts 54 ranked institutions, a significant increase, placing it fourth globally in representation.
IIT Delhi and Bombay secured their spot in top 150 universities around the world as QS World University Ranking 2026 was released early Thursday.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi gained the top spot in the list among educational institues in India sharing the 123rd spot with Georgia Institute of Technology, US. This is by far the best rank scored by IIT Delhi after coming at 150 and 197 in 2025 and 2024 respectively.
IIT Bombay, however, slipped to 129th position for all-time best rank of 118 in 2025 but remains in the global top 130 and continues to score high on Employer Reputation ranking 39th on the parameter.
Other Top-Ranked Indian Institutes
IIT Madras, Kharagpur, Indian Institute of Science, University of Delhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru University were among the 54 Indian institutions which made their way into the list.
With eight new institutions added to the list this time, India recorded its strongest presence with 54 institutions in the rankings this year, a significant jump from 46 in 2025 and 45 in 2024.
India now comes fourth in the most represented country after the US (192 institutions), the UK (90 institutions), and Mainland China (72 institutions).
No other country or territory has seen this many universities added to the ranking this year. After India, Jordan and Azerbaijan are second-most improved with six institutes added to the 2026 list.
QS World Rankings 2026
Globally the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) maintained its lead as the 'best institute in the world' followed by Imperial College London and Stanford University at second and third places.
The University of Oxford came in fourth position followed by Harvard University in fifth place.
Among Asian countries, the National University of Singapore (NUS) secured its position in the top 10 universities in the world coming at number 8.
China are continued its upward trend with Peking maintaining its 14th place, Tsinghua University rising to 17th, while Fudan University made a significant leap of nine places to rank 30th.
Hong Kong SAR is recognised as the world's most improved higher education system in this year's list among countries with five or more ranked universities.
