Himachal Pradesh: Schools, Colleges To Remain Closed Today Due To Heavy Rain, Landslides

Schools, Colleges remain closed in Himachal Pradesh due to heavy rain and landslides.

In the wake of ongoing heavy rain that led to twin landslides and cloudbursts, all educational institutions in Himachal Pradesh have been shut down. The state has been experiencing substantial rainfall since Sunday. Prioritizing the safety of students, the state government has mandated the closure of all schools and universities until August 19. In a circular dated August 14, the Himachal Pradesh University announced the suspension of all teaching activities until August 19 due to the torrential rains causing landslides and roadblocks in the region.

 “The University library would also remain closed till August 20. However, teaching and non-teaching staff would attend the university as usual,” as per the PTI report.

According to the latest updates, over the past three days, a tragic building collapse linked to landslides has resulted in the loss of at least 60 lives. The state emergency operation center reports that Himachal Pradesh has incurred substantial damages amounting to Rs 7,171 crore from the commencement of the monsoon on June 24 up to August 14. During this monsoon season, the state has witnessed 170 incidents of cloudbursts and landslides, causing damage to around 9,600 houses, as per the PTI report.

In response to incessant rains, the state government ordered the closure of schools in Himachal Pradesh on August 14. There are reports of a landslide occurring near St. Edwards School. Moreover, approximately 857 roads have been obstructed for vehicular traffic, while 4,285 transformers and 889 water supply schemes are disrupted across 11 out of 12 districts in the state.

Haryana Schools To Remain Closed Today

The Haryana Government has announced a holiday for both government and private schools in the state, in light of the Independence Day celebrations. This means that all schools within the state will remain closed. The decision to grant this holiday applies to all schools, regardless of whether they are government-owned or privately owned. The reason for this extended day off is the observance of Independence Day events, which took place on a Tuesday. To implement this decision, the Haryana education department issued instructions to district education officers and district elementary education officers across the state.
