Delhi University To Reopen From Feb 17 After Students Hold Protest To Resume Classes

Reportedly, the decision came after an Academic Council meeting of authorities.

New Delhi: In the view of ongoing protest by students demanding reopening of on-campus classes, Delhi University on Wednesday said that it will resume classes from February 17.

The decision was shared by Proctor Proffessor Rajni Abbi.

"Delhi University to reopen from February 17, announces Proctor Prof. Rajni Abbi following demonstration by students," news agency ANI reported.

However, no official communication has been made by the University as to how there plan to resume campus amid the ongoing Covid threat. No guidelines, protocols and SOPs have been announced by Delhi University so far.

Reportedly, the decision came after an Academic Council meeting of authorities.

Scores of students held a protest outside the office of Delhi University's Vice-Chancellor earlier this week, demanding immediate reopening of the campus. The students hung an ''Out of Service'' placard on the gate of the VC office.

According to reports, the demonstration was organised by the Students' Federation of India (SFI). The SFI said over 400 students took part in the 'gherao'.

Reacting to the protest organised by students, DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh had said that the university would reopen after taking stock of the level of preparedness.

He also said that the protesting students were becoming “unnecessarily impatient” and that such a big decision required many factors to be considered.

The students' rage came after the campus continued to remain shut despite a dip in daily Covid caseload in the capital city. Students also pointed out that other universities in the capital like Jawaharlal Nehru University and Ambedkar University Delhi have already announced 100% re-opening.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority has already given directions to reopen higher educational institutions and coaching centres, along with schools for classes 9-12.
