Decide On 50% Women's Reservation Within 3 Weeks: High Court Tells DU
The Delhi High Court directed the Delhi University (DU) vice-chancellor to decide on a representation seeking 50% reservation for women in the upcoming Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Delhi University (DU) vice-chancellor to decide on a representation seeking 50% reservation for women in the upcoming Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections within three weeks.
A bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela after hearing the petition, said that the VC should decide on the representation seeking 50% reresentation for women in DUSU Polls expeditiously, preferably within three weeks.
The bench noted the the petitioner had given the representation to the university in October 2023.
Petitioner Shabana Hussain had approached the court contending that the DUSU polls were heavily influenced by money and muscle, which adversly impacted the participation of women in the elections.
Hussain approached the court seeking a direction for 50% reservation for women in the DUSU polls scheduled for September 27.
The court was told that the nomination process for the elections is scheduled to begin on September 17.

The high court was told that the reservation was needed to ensure gender equality in student elections. The plea sought a direction to the varsity to comply with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations of 2006.
The Lyngdoh Committee was led by former Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh, and was constituted to draft guidelines on student elections across Indian higher education institutions.
Many big names in Indian politics started there political career from DUSU elections. Former Finance Minister and BJP leader Arun Jaitley served as DUSU president from ABVP in 1974. Congress leaders Ajay Maken and Alka Lamba are among few of those big names, that were part of DUSU.
