Crime Against Women: Nearly 2 Females Targeted In Delhi Every Hour In 2022, NCRB Says

According to the annual crime report, there were 2,98,988 cases reported under the Indian Penal Code in Delhi in 2022, up from 2,89,045 in 2021.

Around two women were targeted by criminals per hour in Delhi in 2022, which also saw a significant increase in the number of cybercrime incidents, according to the most recent NCRB data, news agency PTI reported. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the national capital had about three lakh criminal cases in 2022, a 3.3% rise over 2021. According to the annual crime report, there were 2,98,988 cases reported under the Indian Penal Code in Delhi in 2022, up from 2,89,045 in 2021.

In 2022, the national capital's cybercrime cases roughly doubled. In 2022, the number of such instances increased from 345 in 2021 to 685. The figure was substantially lower in 2020, at 166.

Last year, Delhi had the greatest number of crimes against women among India's 19 major cities.

In 2022, the national capital recorded 14,158 incidents of crimes against women, the most of any metropolis, followed by Mumbai (6,176) and Bengaluru (3,924).

According to the report, crimes against women in Delhi increased by 1.25 percent in 2022, from 13,982 in 2021. In 2020, the city recorded 9,782 such instances.

In 2022, a lady was allegedly abducted, gang-raped, and paraded around the streets of east Delhi's Kasturba Nagar by her attackers, her hair cut, her face blackened, and a shoe garland around her neck.

The occurrence, which was the result of personal animosity, brought to light the vulnerability of women in the nation's capital.

According to NCRB data, Delhi has 1,204 rape incidents in 2022. It also documented 129 dowry-related deaths.

In 2022, the national capital saw sixteen murders as a result of shady love relationships.

The instances included the spectacular murder of Shradha Walkar, whose live-in boyfriend, Aaftab Amin Poonawala, reportedly killed her on May 18, last year, sawed her body into multiple pieces, and stored them in a refrigerator for about three weeks at his home in Mehrauli, south Delhi.

Delhi Records Most Road Fatalities In Country In 2022: NCRB

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the national capital had the highest number of road collision deaths in the country in 2022, with 2,103 individuals killed. According to the 'Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2022' study, Delhi had the greatest number of road accidents in the country — 5,387 — and 1,412 fatal road accidents.

Overspeeding (51.5%) was responsible for the majority of road accident deaths in 53 megacities, including Delhi, followed by unsafe or negligent driving/overtaking (31.3%) and driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol (2.7%). According to the data, a total of 68,236 road accidents were recorded in 53 cities across the country in 2022, with 57,246 people injured and 17,680 people killed.

The NCRB analysis included three primary contributors to unintentional deaths: road accidents, railway accidents, and railway crossing accidents. According to the report, road accidents accounted for 97.3 percent of all accidents. 

The majority of these incidents happened near residential areas (29.1%), followed by industrial areas (9.7%), and regions surrounding educational institutions such as schools and colleges (8.7%). According to the survey, Delhi also led the list of cities with the highest number of railway accidents, accounting for 50.9 percent of all mishaps in 2022.
