BJP Forms High-Level Committee To Probe Kolkata Law College Sexual Assault Case
BJP hits out at TMC over Kolkata law college sexual assault case, forms probe panel. Survivor alleges political links as arrests trigger massive outrage and demand for accountability.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal following the shocking gangrape of a law student at a private college in Kolkata. The incident, which has ignited public outrage and political uproar, allegedly involves individuals linked to the ruling party’s student wing.
Addressing the media, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra strongly condemned the incident and questioned the role of the state administration. “In a state governed by a woman Chief Minister, one would expect greater sensitivity towards women’s safety. But this level of cruelty and insensitivity is alarming,” Patra said.
Referring to the accused, Patra alleged political connections, pointing out that the prime suspect, Manojit Mishra, had previously held a position within the TMC’s student wing. “This is not just a case of sexual violence—this is a politically influenced act of brutality. The survivor’s statement reveals chilling details that make it appear as if this horrific crime was state-enabled,” he added.
BJP Forms Fact-Finding Team
In response to the incident, BJP President JP Nadda has constituted a four-member fact-finding committee to investigate the case. The panel includes former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, along with MPs Biplab Deb and Manan Mishra. The team is expected to visit the site and submit a report to the party leadership.

Patra also issued a direct call to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee: “This is not a matter where we seek clarification. We are demanding accountability. Mamata Banerjee must apologise and step down.”
Timeline of the Crime
The incident occurred on the evening of June 15 inside South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata’s Kasba area. According to police, the 24-year-old first-year law student was allegedly assaulted inside the college premises by three men. The survivor claimed that two of the accused pinned her down while the third sexually assaulted her in a security guard’s room, after evicting the guard.
Three individuals—Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20)—were arrested within 24 hours of the survivor’s complaint. On Saturday, police also arrested the college's 55-year-old security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, bringing the total number of arrests to four.
Chilling Details In The Complaint
In a deeply disturbing statement, the survivor revealed that she was ambushed shortly after a meeting linked to the TMC’s student wing. Identified by the initials ‘M’, ‘J’, and ‘P’ in her complaint, the men allegedly cornered her around 7:30 PM and tried to assault her.
“I begged him to let me go… I told him I had a boyfriend, that I loved him. I even touched his feet,” the survivor wrote. Despite her pleas, she was allegedly dragged to a security room, beaten with a hockey stick, and repeatedly threatened. She said the men warned her to remain silent or risk the lives of her loved ones.
Hours later, the survivor was released with threats hanging over her head. But she chose to come forward. “Today, I’ve made up my mind. I want justice. As a law student, I now stand as a victim. And I want justice to be served,” her complaint reads.
Political Fallout
The incident has evoked painful memories of previous campus assaults in the state, notably last year’s RG Kar Medical College case. The BJP has seized on the opportunity to attack the Mamata Banerjee government, sharing images of the main accused with top TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and Health Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has called for state-wide protests, demanding answers from the government and highlighting what he described as “political shielding of criminals.”
TMC Tries Damage Control
Facing mounting pressure, the TMC has attempted to distance itself from the accused. Trinakur Bhattacharya, president of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, said, “We stand with the survivor. The accused must receive the harshest punishment.” He acknowledged that Mishra was formerly associated with the student wing but insisted that he hadn’t held any position since 2019.
“We never denied his past affiliation, but linking the entire party to his actions is unfair. He is a criminal, not a party representative,” Bhattacharya stated.
