Indian Aviation Moves To A Sustainable Future, 86 Airports Using Green Energy

About 86 airports in the country are making progress toward adopting green energy solutions, and 55 airports have reached their full energy consumption through renewable sources of energy.

India’s aviation industry is successfully making inroads towards sustainable aviation. About 86 airports in the country are making progress toward adopting green energy solutions, and of these, 55 airports have reached the target of ensuring their full energy consumption is achieved through renewable sources of energy. 

The data was revealed by Gen. V.K. Singh (Retd.), the Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Thursday. 

The Union Minister shared the update and said, “Presently, 86 airports across the country are using green energy out of which share of green energy in airport’s total energy consumption is 100 per cent for 55 airports,” reported Financial Express. 

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has stressed the significance of reducing carbon emissions at airports to work towards a better future for all. In order to do so, traditional energy sources need to be forsaken. 

The Minister stressed that traditional energy sources are the main contributor to airports’ carbon emissions. So, these airports are working with a focus on green energy alternatives to reduce their carbon footprint.

Singh further added, “Therefore, MoCA has advised all the operational airports with scheduled operations and developers of the upcoming Greenfield Airports to work towards achieving Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero which inter-alia includes the use of green energy.”

The Ministry also informed the Parliament that airports worldwide are dedicated to using renewable or green energy. There is a shifting trend toward sustainable energy sources and airports all over the world are following it. Indian airports also are gravitating towards it, the report noted. 

Many global airports like Heathrow, London Gatwick, Bristol in the UK, Athens in Greece, Oslo in Norway, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Brussels in Belgium, Budapest in Hungary, Copenhagen in Denmark, San Diego in the U.S., Vancouver in Canada, Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, have all achieved carbon neutrality. Majorly through the use of renewable energy sources along with other measures, this achievement has been possible, the report added.
