Mahabhagavata Upapurana, Chapter 35:

etasminnanntare gauri gatram liptva haridraya |
snanaprayaṇa udyukta babhuva munipungava || 5 ||
tada hi sabhiraksartha mandirasya mahesvari |
vintayamasa visvesamapi raksanakarini || 6 ||

Meaning: Goddess Gauri, having applied turmeric paste to her body, prepared to take a bath. At that time, Jagadamba, who protects the entire universe, began contemplating the protection of her own abode. In the meantime, remembering Lord Vishnu’s pre-prayer, she took a portion of the turmeric paste from her body and created her son, Ganesha.

Here, there is a story related to the pre-prayer where Lord Vishnu seeks a boon to be the son of the Goddess. This is described in the previous chapter -

tathaham api chaitasyah putratam prapya vai dhruvam |
ankamaruhnya prasnami stanyam paramabhavatah ||11||
evam vicintya bhagavan visnuh paramapurusah |
adhyayan chetasa devim pranipatya yayau yada ||12||
tada tasyabhilasam tu vijnaya paramesvari |
tasmai dadau varam visno matputrastvam bhavisyasi ||13||

Here is the translation of the verses from the Mahabhagavata Upapurana, Chapter 34, Verses 11-13:

Meaning: The Supreme Lord Vishnu had a thought that he too wanted to be a son of the Goddess and play in her lap, as he had seen Kartikeya being held. Thinking this, he meditated on the Goddess in his mind, bowed to her, and as he was about to leave, the Supreme Goddess, understanding his desire, granted him the boon that he would indeed become her son.

Lord Vishnu manifested as Ganapati, and then Goddess Parvati meditated on Vishnu, who had incarnated as Dhanvantari, the founder of Ayurveda. According to the Brahmanda Purana (Upodghāta Pāda 67.15-19), Vishnu, in his Dhanvantari form, was invoked through the application of Ayurvedic turmeric paste.

Swami Anjani Nandan Das explains that by applying turmeric, which is highly valued in Ayurveda, Goddess Parvati intended to encourage Ayurveda. Although Lord Vishnu transcends turmeric and the physical body, he performed this divine play to promote Ayurvedic medicine.
