Trump tweets support for Handel as Democrats eye big win in Georgia

New York [U.S.], June 20 (ANI):U.S. President Donald Trump has urged voters to vote for Republican Karen Handel, who is fighting a close race against Democratic newcomer Jon Ossoff in a highly anticipated District 6 race of Georgia on Tuesday.

KAREN HANDEL FOR CONGRESS. She will fight for lower taxes, great healthcare strong security-a hard worker who will never give up! VOTE TODAY

The seat has been held by Republicans since Newt Gingrich won it in 1978, but multiple polls have shown Ossoff with a narrow lead.

Businesswoman Karen Handel was the first elected Republican to serve as Georgia's Secretary of State, and now she's hoping to keep the state's 6th congressional district red.

Handel is battling Democrat Jon Ossoff in Georgia's special House election on Tuesday to take over the seat vacated when Tom Price was appointed Health and Human Services Secretary.

Progressives have poured USD 23 million into Jon Ossoff's campaign making it the most expensive House race in U.S. history, with candidates, their parties and super PACs pouring more than USD 50 million combined into the effort to win a single House seat in the northern Atlanta suburbs, CNN has reported.

More than 140,000 voters cast their ballots early -- an astounding number for a special election, and one that nearly matches presidential contests.

Handel wants to repeal and replace ObamaCare and strengthen the country's borders, according to her campaign website.

Trump has attacked Handel's opponent often on Twitter. He had also attended a fundraiser on Handel's behalf in April.

Trump has attacked Ossoff for living just outside the district, claiming Ossoff will raise taxes. He has described Handel a hard worker "who will never give up!"

The election at this juncture is very significant as the result will determine whether President Donald Trump's sagging approval ratings will improve or it will prove as a drag on Republicans that could threaten the party's control of the House in the 2018 November midterm elections. Whatever be the outcome of the election it will act as a boost for the winner's party and a blow for the loser's.

If Ossoff wins, Democrats would have a clear victory that could help keep the party's hyper-engaged base and donor community energized but a loss would be a major disappointment. (ANI)
