Why were Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram down?

At around 9.15 pm on Monday, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram suffered a global outage. All the social media platforms were inaccessible to anyone in the world leading to huge losses. The reason behind it was down servers.
