Jharkhand Student Protest: First Talks With Government End Without Breakthrough

The first round of talks between Jharkhand’s protesting students and the state government over alleged irregularities in JSC and JSSC recruitment examinations ended without a concrete resolution. The meeting lasted around 80 minutes, with 10 student representatives and four ministers participating. Students said the government acknowledged that their demands were legitimate and promised to consider them, but they were not given a written assurance, leading them to continue their protest. Their key demands include cancellation of disputed examinations and an investigation by the CBI and ED. The student movement began in Ranchi on July 25, with some students starting an indefinite hunger strike on August 2. After several attempts to initiate dialogue, the government and student representatives finally held talks at the State Guest House on August 7. Students have warned that if their demands are not addressed, they will proceed with an Assembly gherao on August 10. The government has said it will convey the students’ demands to Chief Minister Hemant Soren and seek further discussions.
