BREAKING: INDIA Bloc Launches ‘Save Democracy’ Campaign Over SIR, ECI Functioning
The INDIA bloc has launched a “Save Democracy” campaign over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and concerns surrounding the functioning of the Election Commission of India, with protests planned from October 2 to October 8. As part of the campaign, opposition parties are set to hold demonstrations outside district magistrates’ offices across the country. In Delhi, Youth Congress workers are preparing to march from the Youth Congress office towards Jantar Mantar, while opposition MPs are scheduled to march towards the Election Commission on October 6. A protest has also been announced at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with Left student organisation AISA, Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Kishor and other social activists expected to participate. The Aam Aadmi Party has extended support to the protest. However, police permission for the demonstration has reportedly not been granted. Authorities have imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in the Jantar Mantar and New Delhi areas and have made security arrangements ahead of the planned gatherings. Reports have also emerged of disruptions or restrictions affecting internet connectivity in parts of New Delhi amid the heightened security situation. Police have urged people to follow the applicable restrictions and cooperate with security personnel. The protests come amid a wider political dispute over the SIR exercise and opposition parties’ concerns regarding the Election Commission’s functioning. The developments are being closely watched as security measures remain in place around central Delhi.
