Telangana Polls: Election Commission Seeks Report On BRS Candidate's 'Suicide Threat'

During an election rally, BRS candidate P Kaushik Reddy said that, if victorious, there would be a celebratory procession, but in the event of defeat, a funeral procession would be held on December 4.

The Election Commission called for a report on an alleged threat made by BRS candidate Kaushik Reddy to voters during the last day of election campaign for Telangana elections. The candidate is alleged to have said that he would resort to suicide along with his family members if he faced defeat. In response, the EC instructed the returning officer for the Huzurabad constituency in Karimnagar to conduct an inquiry and submit a detailed report.

During an election rally on the final day of the campaign on Tuesday, BRS candidate P. Kaushik Reddy made a statement that, if victorious, there would be a celebratory procession, but in the event of defeat, a funeral procession would be held on December 4, according to a report on IANS.

Standing alongside his wife and daughter, Kaushik Reddy conveyed to the audience that it was their decision whether they wished to witness them taking their lives by hanging. He stated, "It's your choice. If you don't vote for me, you will see our lifeless bodies."

Kaushik Reddy, a member of the Telangana Legislative Council, appealed to the people to grant him an opportunity by electing him to the Assembly in the November 30 election. Notably, he is contesting against BJP's sitting MLA and former minister Eatala Rajender and Congress candidate Vodithala Pranav.

In 2018 elections, Kaushik Reddy lost from the same constituency as the candidate of Congress party to Rajender, who was then elected on TRS (now BRS) ticket.

In 2021, Rajender switched to BJP and resigned as an MLA which triggered a by-election. During this period, Kaushik Reddy left the Congress to join the BRS in anticipation of securing a party ticket. Despite his hopes, the BRS selected G. Srinivas Yadav as their candidate for the by-election. Rajender went on to secure the seat with a substantial majority of over 23,000 votes.

Subsequently, the BRS nominated Kaushik Reddy to the Legislative Council. However, the ruling party later fielded him as a candidate to challenge Rajender in the electoral contest.
