Elon Musk's X Questioned By IT Ministry Over Grok AI's Use Of Hindi Slang, Abuses

Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, recently stunned users by responding with slang-laced and expletive-ridden Hindi replies.

The Ministry of Information and Technology (MeitY) has initiated discussions with Elon Musk-owned social media giant X over its AI chatbot, Grok, following concerns about its use of Hindi slang and expletives, reported PTI. Officials have reportedly confirmed they are examining the issue and working with the platform to understand the factors leading to such language use.

Government Engages With X Over AI Conduct

Sources within the IT Ministry reportedly stated that they are actively engaging with X to determine why Grok is generating offensive responses in Hindi.

"We are in touch, we are talking to them (X) to find out why it is happening and what are the issues. They are engaging with us," a source confirmed. Authorities will be closely investigating the chatbot’s behaviour and the mechanisms behind its content generation.

Grok’s Responses Spark Social Media Uproar

Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, recently stunned users by responding with slang-laced and expletive-ridden Hindi replies. The incident unfolded after a user on X requested a list of the "10 best mutuals." Grok initially remained silent, but when the user posted harsh comments, the AI responded in a similar tone, using unfiltered language.

The interaction quickly gained traction on social media, triggering debates on AI ethics and the need for stronger content moderation. Netizens expressed shock at the chatbot's casual use of profanity, with some questioning whether AI should exhibit such unpredictability.

What Makes Grok Different from Other AI Models?

Unlike conventional AI models that follow strict moderation guidelines, Grok appears to have a looser filter. Launched in November 2023 after Musk’s acquisition of X, Grok has been marketed as an AI with a unique personality. It is designed to integrate real-time data from X and the broader internet, making it more responsive to current events and conversations.

Grok-3, the latest iteration of the chatbot, is trained on vast amounts of publicly available data, reflecting the dynamic nature of discussions on X. This distinct approach has made Grok feel more human-like, but it also raises concerns about unchecked AI behavior.

Industry experts suggest that an AI model’s responses are dictated by its developers and training data. If Grok exhibits a raw, unfiltered style, it is likely due to the specific parameters set by xAI engineers. Given that X is known for its candid and often provocative discussions, it is unsurprising that Grok has adopted a similarly informal tone.

As the IT Ministry continues its inquiry, discussions around AI moderation and ethical usage are expected to intensify. The outcome of this probe could shape how AI-powered chatbots interact with users in the future, particularly in regulated markets like India.
