Users May Soon Be Able To Transfer WhatsApp Chats Without Backing Up On Google Drive

Meta-owned Whatsapp is working to bring the ability to transfer chats without depending on Google Drive. The world's most popular messaging platform may let soon users simply scan a QR code on a new device to securely transfer their chats, without having to back up the chat on Google Drive. The feature is currently available for Android on beta, says WABetaInfo.

"In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.1.25 update, we announced that WhatsApp was developing a new feature to improve how chats are migrated to other phones: a chat transfer option. With the chat transfer option, users won’t need to back up their chat history to Google Drive in case they want to migrate their account to a new Android device. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.9.19 update available on the Google Play Store, WhatsApp is now rolling out this feature to some lucky beta testers," WhatsApp beta tester WABetaInfo wrote on its page.

 

As per WABetaInfo, WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.9.22 has added the ability to transfer chats easily on the messaging platform. The option would work by going to Settings>Chats>Chat Transfer. This is unlike what we have been doing forever -- backup the chats on Google Drive and then register on a new device via OTP and restore the chats via the backed-up chats or data on GOogle Drive.

"As you can see in this screenshot, the chat transfer option is available within WhatsApp Settings > Chats and it allows users to migrate their chat history to a new Android device. After selecting this option, we have to scan the provided QR code to initiate the process to migrate our chat history to the new Android device," WABetaInfo added on its page.

This development comes days after the Meta-owned messaging platform officially announced it is introducing the ability to run multiple mobile phones with a single WhatsApp account. This means that one WhatsApp account will be accessed on multiple devices, thanks to the new update. The additional devices could mean four smartphones or four PCs or a mix of both.

The world's most popular messaging platform further added that the update is rolling out to users globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.
