UPI Outage Strikes Again: Nationwide Disruption Hits Digital Payments For Fourth Time In 30 Days

The UPI outage impacted users across major metropolitan areas, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.

UPI Down: A fresh wave of disruption rocked India’s widely used Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system on Monday morning, affecting millions of users attempting transactions through popular apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. This marks the fourth time in just 30 days that UPI services have faltered, raising concerns over the platform's stability as India races toward becoming a cashless economy.

Major Cities Hit as UPI Fails Again

The technical outage impacted users across major metropolitan areas, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Reports of transaction failures began flooding in early in the day, according to DownDetector, a real-time outage monitoring site. The website’s live outage map lit up with complaints from across the country, confirming the widespread nature of the issue.

UPI Outage Strikes Again: Nationwide Disruption Hits Digital Payments For Fourth Time In 30 Days

It should be noted that at the time of writing, the outage trend for UPI is notably on the rise and the alert level on the website stood at orange, which is usually a sign that more reports of outage are coming in from across the country. Of course, once the outage reaches mass scale, the Downdetector graph/flags turn red.

Digital payment users were left stranded mid-purchase, with QR codes failing to scan and money transfers getting declined — a scenario that played out just two days ago as well. Saturday had already seen a significant disruption, making Monday’s failure even more frustrating for users and merchants alike.

Has NPCI Responded?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees the UPI ecosystem, has yet to share a statement on the latest outage.

Reacting to the disruption on Saturday, NPCI tweeted, "NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue, and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused."

Later in the day, NPCI updated users via another tweet, stating:

Despite reassurances, this marks yet another dent in UPI’s reliability record, especially worrying at a time when digital payments have become integral to daily life.

Users Lash Out Online

As has become customary, frustrated users turned to the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice their concerns.

The frequency of these outages — four in just a month — has begun to spark serious questions about infrastructural resilience and the preparedness of UPI to handle the load of India's growing digital economy.
