AI To Surpass Human Coders Within This Year, Predicts OpenAI CPO. So, Will There Be More Layoffs?

"At the rate we're going, I would be surprised if it's 2027. I think it's going to be sooner," OpenAI CPO Kevin Weil stated during a podcast with Varun Mayya and Tanmay Bhat.

OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil has claimed that artificial intelligence will permanently outmatch human coders—potentially as early as the end of this year. His remarks came during a conversation with Varun Mayya and Tanmay Bhat on their YouTube show Overpowered, where he responded to Anthropic’s prediction that full coding automation would happen by 2027.

"At the rate we're going, I would be surprised if it's 2027. I think it's going to be sooner," Weil stated, highlighting the rapid progress OpenAI’s models have made in competitive programming.

AI’s Leap in Competitive Coding

Weil detailed how OpenAI’s AI models have improved dramatically with each iteration. He recalled that an early preview version of GPT-01 ranked around the millionth-best competitive coder globally — a seemingly unimpressive feat, but still placing it in the top 2-3% of the estimated 30-40 million programmers worldwide.

The improvements, however, have been exponential. “GPT-01 moved up to the top 1,000 globally,” Weil noted. The upcoming model, GPT-03, has already demonstrated a significant leap, ranking as the 175th-best competitive programmer according to benchmarks. He further revealed that OpenAI is now training successor models that have already surpassed this level.

“I think this is the year that, at least by competitive coding benchmarks, AI becomes better than humans at competitive coding forever,” Weil asserted. Drawing parallels to past technological breakthroughs, he likened this moment to when computers outpaced humans in arithmetic decades ago or when AI surpassed human players in chess.

The Future of AI in Software Development

Weil believes AI’s progress in coding will unlock new opportunities, enabling a future where software development is no longer limited to engineers. “Imagine all the things that you can do if you don't need to be an engineer to create software. AI passing humans at software is way more important than AI passing humans at chess because with software, you can create anything you want,” he said.

He emphasised the transformative potential of this shift, suggesting that AI will democratise software development, allowing more people to bring their ideas to life without needing deep programming expertise.

AI as an Augmenting Force, Not a Replacement

While AI is set to surpass human coders in technical ability, Weil clarified that human decision-making and expertise will still play a crucial role. “Understanding what problems to solve, where to focus your work, where the leverage is — those kinds of things are still going to matter,” he explained.

Instead of replacing human programmers outright, Weil envisions AI becoming a powerful tool integrated into daily workflows. “You're going to be using it day in and day out to augment yourself in your job,” he predicted. Rather than eliminating roles, he sees AI shifting work dynamics, where people increasingly act as managers overseeing AI-powered coding assistants that handle routine tasks.

As AI continues to advance at an unprecedented pace, Weil’s prediction signals a major turning point for the software industry—one that could redefine how programming is approached in the years to come.
