WATCH: As Microsoft Turns 50, AI Copilot Roasts Gates, Ballmer & Nadella In Rare CEO Reunion

The session gave viewers a lighthearted glimpse into the personalities behind Microsoft’s leadership across decades — and offered a moment of reflection on how far the company, and its technology, have come.

In a rare gathering to mark Microsoft’s 50th anniversary, the company’s past and present CEOs — Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and Satya Nadella — came together for a candid conversation. But instead of a journalist or executive moderating the discussion, it was Microsoft’s own AI assistant, Copilot, leading the session — and not without cracking a few jokes along the way.

AI Takes the Mic

The interaction was part celebration, part comedy roast, as Copilot played host and humorist. Known for his high-energy public appearances, Steve Ballmer was the first to be teased.

“Steve,” Copilot began, “your enthusiasm is legendary, but do you ever worry that your energy might short-circuit the AI? Even robots need a coffee break after your pep talks.”

Ballmer responded without missing a beat: “Come on, dude. If you can’t handle me, you can’t handle a huge percentage of the world’s population. We’re counting on you.”

Gates Takes It Lightly

The focus then shifted to Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates, who received a good-natured jab about his famously thoughtful demeanor.

“Bill,” Copilot said, “you’ve got that signature thoughtful gaze... do you think AI might feel intimidated by your intense thinking face? It’s like it’s waiting for a blue screen moment.”

Gates replied with a smirk: “I hope so. I mean, that’s all I’ve got left as these AIs get so damn intelligent. It’s just that gaze and my willingness to criticize that differentiates me.”

Copilot followed up with: “Would I criticize Bill? Absolutely. Criticism is where growth happens.”

Nadella on AI Taking Over

Copilot closed the loop by turning to the current CEO, Satya Nadella, asking whether he ever worried about AI replacing him.

“Well,” Nadella said with a grin, “the day I can play like the best cricket player that I enjoy, that’s the day it can run the show, as far as I’m concerned.”

“Touché, Satya,” Copilot replied. “Let’s see if it can hit a century in cricket, and then we’ll talk.”

A Toast to the Past — and the Future

The exchange ended with all three CEOs raising a toast to Microsoft’s 50-year journey. “Cheers,” they said in unison.

Copilot added its own twist: “Cheers. Whatever that means to an AI. Is it drink?”

The session gave viewers a lighthearted glimpse into the personalities behind Microsoft’s leadership across decades — and offered a moment of reflection on how far the company, and its technology, have come.
