Instagram Threads App Not Launching In The EU. Here's Why

The new Threads platform by Meta-owned Instagram is designed to import data from the photo-sharing app, including behavioural and advertising information.

While Meta-owned Instagram is ready to launch its Twitter, Threads this week, the app will not launch in the Europen Union (EU) and in Ireland, on the back of privacy concerns. Instagram Threads is slated to launch tomorrow (July 6) as an alternative to Twitter which is facing backlash after its owner and tech billionaire Elon Musk imposed a temporary limit on how many tweets a user can read on the micro-blogging site.

According to a report by news agency Bloomberg, Meta's answer to rival Twitter, Instagram Threads, isn’t yet appearing in some European app stores even as users in the US and UK were offered a preorder option. Apple App Stores in some European Union countries, including Germany and Belgium, weren’t displaying Threads as of late Tuesday. The new service is expected to go live on Thursday, according to a listing on Apple Inc.’s App Store.

As per Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, the service won’t be rolled out in the EU in the foreseeable future, says a report by the country’s Independent newspaper that cited a spokesperson. The EU’s privacy regulator hasn’t actively blocked the app, but Meta hasn’t prepared for launching it in the bloc, the newspaper added.

Instagram Threads is scheduled to launch on July 6, according to an Apple App Store listing for the app, amid criticism of Twitter due to Musk imposed limit on reading posts on the platform. This also means that Instagram Threads is ready to be launched on Apple iPhone. A recent report also suggests that Thread's version for Android has also been spotted on the official Google Play Store. The app has been in development since January and will be directly integrated with Meta-owned Instagram, reports say.

Social networking giant Meta has also added a launch date teaser to the Instagram app. One has to type “threads” into the search box on Instagram (or a number of other keywords) which causes a ticket icon to appear on the search bar. Once you tap on it, a spinning ticket appears to show your Instagram username alongside a local launch time. It is ready to be launched at 10 am ET on July 6. The spinning ticket also includes a QR code that links to threads.net, which is the purported new social media platform’s web portal.
