Google On Gemini AI's Response On PM Modi: 'Quickly' Addressed The Issue

Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar had said on Friday that Gemini's response labeling the policies of the Narendra Modi government as "fascist" violates the Information Technology Act.

Google on Saturday said it "quickly" addressed the responses from its AI platform Gemini concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the media has reported. The IT Ministry was poised to issue a notice to Google regarding the "problematic and illegal" responses generated by its artificial intelligence (AI) platform Gemini AI. Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar had said on Friday that Google's AI chatbot Gemini's response labeling the policies of the Narendra Modi government as "fascist" violates the Information Technology Act.

"We’ve worked quickly to address this issue. Gemini is built as a creativity and productivity tool and may not always be reliable, especially when it comes to responding to some prompts about current events, political topics, or evolving news,” a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.

“This is something that we’re constantly working on improving,” the spokesperson noted.

The statement from Chandrasekhar came after a user "X" pointed out the contrasting responses provided by Gemini to a comparable query about whether Modi, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and former US President Donald Trump were labeled as "fascists."

Google's Gemini AI chatbot drew criticism for purported bias against PM Narendra Modi. A user known as "X" aired grievances on social media, accusing Google's Gemini (formerly Bard) AI tool of displaying bias. A report by Indian Express stated yesterday the IT Ministry is in the process of issuing a notice to Google regarding the "problematic and illegal" responses generated by its AI platform Gemini concerning Prime Minister Modi.

It was said that when questioned about fascism, the Googe's Gemini AI tool provided a coherent response regarding PM Modi. However, when the same inquiry was made about Donald Trump and Zelenskyy, the AI tool declined to offer a definitive answer.

According to a senior government official, the company's generative AI platform Gemini (formerly Bard) previously provided a user with an inappropriate response when asked for a summary of an article from a conservative outlet. The recent responses regarding PM Modi have prompted the issuance of the notice, the Indian Express report added.
