Google Pulling The Plug On Gmail's HTML Version Next Year

For supported browsers, Gmail will open automatically in Standard view of Gmail post January 2024.

Google will pull the plug on the Basic HTML version of Gmail early next year. Starting in January 2024, the tech giant will discontinue the Basic HTML version of Gmail, says the company's support page. For supported browsers, Gmail will open automatically in Standard view. There is no clarity on when Google decided to shut down the Basic HTML version of Gmail, but after January 2024, Google will automatically change the Basic HTML view of Gmail to the Standard version.

"Important: You can display Gmail on your browser in Basic HTML view until January 2024. After this date, Gmail automatically changes to Standard view. If your browser is supported, Gmail automatically opens in Standard view. In Standard view, you can use the latest features and security in Gmail. Learn about supported browsers for Gmail," the company wrote on its support page.

Meanwhile, the tech giant recently announced a deeper integration between its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Bard and services such as YouTube, Google Docs, and Gmail, among others. With this, users can use Bard alongside Google apps and services, double-check its responses and access features in more places. This is Bard’s "most capable model " yet, as per the company.

Privacy concerns surrounding AI is a pertinent question and Google says it is "committed to protecting users' personal information".

For those who choose to use the Workspace extensions, their content from Gmail, Docs and Drive is not seen by human reviewers, used by Bard to show them ads or used to train the Bard model.
