SpaceX’s Starlink has secured a contract with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to enhance the agency’s IT networks, a move that has sparked fresh concerns over potential conflicts of interest involving CEO Elon Musk, reported CNN. The agreement, which comes as Musk pushes for significant reductions in federal spending, has raised eyebrows given his dual role in advocating for budget cuts while benefiting from government contracts.

The exact financial details of the contract have not been disclosed. SpaceX, a private aerospace company, is heavily reliant on government contracts, particularly from NASA. Its Starlink satellite internet service is widely used by both government and private entities across the globe.

Contract Being Scrutinised

The contract is being scrutinised due to Musk’s position as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, where he is leading an initiative to reduce federal staffing, including at the FAA. Critics argue that this presents a conflict of interest, as the agency responsible for regulating SpaceX is now also a customer of one of its services.

According to a post on Musk’s social media platform, X, the FAA is currently testing one Starlink terminal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, along with two others at non-safety-critical sites in Alaska.

Alaska has long had issues with reliable weather information for the aviation community, the FAA noted in its post. “The 2024 FAA reauthorisation required the FAA to fix telecommunications connections to fix those needs.”

A Bloomberg report first revealed the FAA’s adoption of Starlink, stating that the plan involves the deployment of 4,000 terminals over the next 12 to 18 months.

Urgency Of Modernisation For FAA

The FAA has long struggled with outdated technology. A recent Government Accountability Office report stressed the urgency of modernising the agency’s ageing computer and communication systems.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, addressing concerns following a recent crash involving a military helicopter and a regional jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, stated that he had discussed airspace modernisation with Musk. “We need to remake our airspace, and we need to do it quickly,” Duffy said.

The FAA also has an existing contract with Verizon to upgrade its networks. Musk, however, criticised Verizon’s work in a post on X, stating, “The Verizon system is not working and so is putting air travellers at serious risk.”

In response, Verizon defended its role.

“Verizon is bringing the nation’s most reliable network to the FAA at a time when critical infrastructure and technology enhancements are needed most,” company spokesperson Rich Young said in a statement to CNN.

“We’re at the beginning of a 15-year contract with the FAA that will help the agency modernize its technology. Protecting Americans who rely on a safe, secure, and functioning air traffic control system is more important than ever, and our enhancements will help make that happen,” he added.

As the FAA moves forward with its IT modernization efforts, questions surrounding Musk’s influence over federal agencies remain a contentious issue.
