ChatGPT Wants To Be Your Shopping Assistant: OpenAI Revamps Search With Smart Recommendations

OpenAI has clarified that the feature won’t display advertisements or earn affiliate commissions from purchases. Instead, the AI will rely on structured data from external sources.

OpenAI is stepping up its game in the online shopping arena. The artificial intelligence firm announced a fresh update to ChatGPT’s web search tool, introducing features that could make it your next go-to shopping assistant. As reported by Reuters, from tailored product suggestions to visuals, reviews, and direct purchase links, the new enhancements promise a smoother, smarter way to browse and buy.

No Ads, No Commissions — Just Pure Recommendations

Unlike traditional search engines that often prioritise paid content, ChatGPT's new shopping tool is keeping it clean. OpenAI has clarified that the feature won’t display advertisements or earn affiliate commissions from purchases. Instead, the AI will rely on structured data from external sources — like product specs, pricing details, and customer reviews — to generate results independently.

“The shopping results will be independently determined, and will rely on structured metadata from third-party sources such as pricing, product descriptions, and reviews,” the company stated.

Whether you’re searching for a new pair of sneakers, home décor inspiration, or the latest beauty gadgets, ChatGPT is set to serve up tailored suggestions based on your specific queries.

Search That Understands You — Powered by GPT-4o

The rollout comes through OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-4o, and will be available to all ChatGPT users globally. That includes those on the Free, Plus, and Pro tiers — even users who aren’t logged in can try it out. The update is designed to help users find exactly what they’re looking for, across a variety of shopping categories such as fashion, electronics, home goods, and more.

“Users will receive tailored product recommendations across categories like fashion, beauty, home goods, and electronics when they pose specific questions,” OpenAI said.

A Quiet Challenge to Google's Ad-Driven Search

With this move, OpenAI is subtly taking aim at Google’s dominance in the search market. By offering ad-free, user-centric shopping results, OpenAI is presenting itself as a more transparent alternative to traditional search engines.

In a telling statistic, the company revealed that ChatGPT’s web search handled over 1 billion searches last week alone. That’s a strong sign of growing user trust and engagement.

In February, OpenAI had also told Reuters that its weekly active users had surpassed 400 million.

While it’s too early to tell how disruptive this update will be, one thing’s clear — ChatGPT is no longer just a chatbot. It’s evolving into a smart, commercial search companion that might just change how we shop online.
