Southern Tamil Nadu Records Spike In Covid Fatalities In May

Madurai stands atop the table with over 900 deaths and only in May 385 people died of Covid

Madurai: Southern Tamil Nadu has seen a rapid increase in Covid-19 cases and deaths in the second wave in May. Madurai stands atop the table with over 900 deaths and only in May 385 people died of Covid and the fatalities in Kanyakumari were recorded as 426. The southern districts in Tamil Nadu have recorded over 1,800 deaths due to Covid-19 in May.

Besides, Madurai and Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar, and Dindigul have recorded rapid growth in the Covid deaths. Ironically, the districts having lesser healthcare infrastructure have recorded lesser fatalities due to the deadly disease.

The overall death rate of southern Tamil Nadu has reduced to 1.15 per cent from 1.24 per cent as reported by TOI. It was over 1.85 lakh cases till April but only May has recorded nearly 1.75 lakh cases with a spike of 94 per cent in the caseload.

Dindigul district collector M Vijayalakshmi told to TOI that the referral of private hospitals to government hospitals at the final stage of the patient is traced to be a challenge and now they had asked the private hospitals not to refer very critical cases to the government hospitals. There is no lacking of oxygen supply, she added.

After the lockdowns, there seems to be a decrease in caseload in the state. While people have gasped for oxygen and there were deaths due to lack of oxygen, now the situation seems to be a little settled with sufficient oxygen in the private and government hospitals in the state.
