Indian Coast Guard Rescues Six Tamil Nadu Fishermen From Distressed Boat Near Gulf Of Mannar

The six fishermen were safely brought to the harbour in Thoothukudi.

Chennai: The Indian Coast Guard saved six Tamil Nadu fishermen who got stuck mid-sea in a distressed boat near Gulf of Mannar on Wednesday. The six fishermen from Thoothukudi were safely brought to the harbour.  

In a tweet, Defence PRO Chennai said, "Indian Coast Guard saved six fishermen from a distressed fishing boat in Gulf of Mannar today. The boat along with crew was safely brought to Tuticorin harbour."



A press release by Defence PRO said,  the Coast Guard ship Abhiraj helped in saving the fishermen named Punitha Anthoniyar.

Later, the boat was safely brought to Thoothukudi harbour along with the crew, it said.

The incident comes after 11 fishermen from Odisha were airlifted by Indian Coast Guard near Sonapur on Monday.

The Indian Coast Guard in Gopalpur received information that 11 fishermen were stranded on a small dinghy due to the cyclonic storm at 3 pm on Monday. Their boat was stuck while they were back from Vishakapatnam since their engine suffered a failure in the winds. 

Later, ICG took a helicopter ALH MK III from Coast Guard Air Enclave, Bhubaneswar to rescue the fishermen. All of them were safely airlifted on Monday.

The ICG had been working in coordination with the state administrations in Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil and Andhra Pradesh due to rough weather caused as a result of Cyclone Asani.
