'Bengal People Deserve Peace And Harmony': Governor Ananda Bose On Stone Pelting Incident In Medinipur

A team of NIA officials had come under attack earlier this month in West Bengal's Medinipur while probing a blast case.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose urged the Election Commission of India on Friday to look into the perpetrators of violence in the alleged stone pelting incident in Medinipur demanding stern action against the accused. On April 6, officials of the National Investigation Agency were allegedly heckled in Purba Medinipur district while carrying out a probe in connection with a blast case.

"...Peace and harmony is something that the people of Bengal want and the people of Bengal deserve," Bose said.

Calling on the authorities including the Election Commission, Bose demanded that the accused by brought to books.

"It is after the authorities to ensure that there is law and order in the state, especially during the elections. Any perpetrators of violence should be booked and stern action should be taken, that is the responsibility of the Election Commission...," he added.

According to an ANI report, the vehicle in which the NIA officers were travelling was allegedly vandalised while a person was being picked up in connection with the case.

In a video that was circulated on social media, the perpetrators were purportedly seen gathering around a vehicle and trying to stop the NIA team from taking the suspect along with them.

Villagers allegedly pelted stones also on the vehicle carrying the NIA officials.

The incident happened close on heels with another incident of manhandling where a team of officers from the Enforcement Directorate were surrounded and heckled by protestors in Sandeshkhali while raiding the residence of ex-Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh and another leader from the ruling party in an alleged food scam.
