Chennai Police Foil History-Sheeter's Escape Bid. 'Tried To Flee While Helping Police Find Weapons'

The incident occurred in the Chetpet area of Chennai, where a police team had escorted Raj to recover weapons he had allegedly used in previous crimes.

A history-sheeter was shot and nabbed by the police on Tuesday after he allegedly attacked officers and attempted to flee. The suspect, identified as Rohit Raj from T.P. Chatram, has over 10 criminal cases pending against him, including charges of murder, assault, and extortion.

The incident occurred in the Chetpet area of Chennai, where a police team had escorted Raj to recover weapons he had allegedly used in previous crimes. According to an official statement, Raj suddenly attacked two police constables during the operation and tried to make a run for it. However, the police quickly thwarted his escape attempt by shooting him in the leg, according to a report on PTI.

According to the police, when Sub-Inspector Kalaiselvi tried to warn Rohit, he attempted to attack her as well. In response, Kalaiselvi opened fire, shooting him below the knee.

"Raj was hiding in Theni and was apprehended by a special police team two days ago," the official said, as per the report. "He was brought to Chennai for interrogation in connection with the murder of another history-sheeter from Mylapore."

The injured Rohit Raj was immediately taken to Kilpauk Government Medical College Hospital for treatment, along with the two constables who sustained injuries during the attack. The police stated that Sub-Inspector Kalaiselvi was forced to open fire in self-defense.

Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun commended Kalaiselvi for her efforts in apprehending the suspect and awarded her a cash reward for her bravery, as reported by PTI.

Meanwhile, last month, one of the accused in the killing of Tamil Nadu's Bahujan Samaj Party chief K Armstrong was killed in an encoutner with the police in Chennai. The deceased was identified as Thiruvengadam.
