South Peninsular India Continues To Experience Heatwave, IMD Says Relief Expected Soon

According to IMD, a trough discontinuity extending from east Vidarbha to north Tamil Nadu in lower tropospheric levels is contributing to the volatile weather patterns.

In the past 24 hours, the weather agency also reported hailstorm activity at isolated locations in Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Assam.

The India Meteorological Centre (IMD) has issued a stern warning as heatwave conditions continue to engulf large swathes of south Peninsular India. On May 7, IMD declared that heat wave conditions are very likely to persist over the region, with a slight abatement anticipated thereafter. Simultaneously, a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected to lash East and South Peninsular India until May 11.

In a recent report, IMD highlighted the escalation of heatwave conditions, noting severe temperatures in isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu and pockets of Rayalaseema, interior Karnataka, and Telangana. Rayalaseema, in particular, has been grappling with heat wave conditions since April 24, 2024. IMD said, "Yesterday (Tuesday), highest maximum temperature of 46.0°C was reported at Nandyal (Rayalaseema) over the country."

In the past 24 hours, the weather agency also reported hailstorm activity at isolated locations in Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Assam.

Adding to the weather complexities, a trough/wind discontinuity extending from east Vidarbha to north Tamil Nadu in lower tropospheric levels is contributing to the volatile weather patterns. Under its influence, IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall across various regions. IMD said, "Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema on 07th & 08th; over Telangana on 07th, over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on 08th & 09th, over Kerala & Mahe on 08th & 11th and over South Interior Karnataka on 08th May, 2024."

On Wednesday, parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai and Cuddalore experienced mild-moderate rainfall.

Hyderabad: 7 Killed In Rain-Related Wall Collapse

In Telangana, heavy downpour disrupted normal life in certain areas of Telangana on Tuesday.

In Bachupally, seven individuals, including a four-year-old child, lost their lives when a retaining wall collapsed at an under-construction apartment due to heavy rains. The victims, identified as migrant workers from Odisha and Chhattisgarh, according to Bachupally police.

The police initiated the rescue efforts immediately and retrieved the bodies from under the debris early on Wednesday.
