Flood-Like Situation In Gujarat As Heavy Rains Pound State, 7 Dead, 9,000 Relocated | Key Points

Gujarat Floods: The situation is likely to get worse as the weather department has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rains in several areas.

Several parts of Gujarat were reeling under floods as heavy rains battered south and central districts, killing atleast seven people in the last 24 hours and forcing over 9,000 people to relocate to safer areas, PTI reported. The situation is likely to get worse as the weather department has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rains in Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi and Surat during the next five days. 

"Seven persons died in rain-related incidents in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll due to rain-related incidents like lightning, drowning, wall collapse etc in Gujarat to 63 since June 1," state Disaster Management Minister Rajendra Trivedi told reporters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah assured the Gujarat government of all possible help from the Centre.

Gujarat Floods: Here Are The Top Developments

  • Over 450 people were rescued in the last 24 hours as heavy rains pounded several parts of south (Dang, Navsari, Tapi, and Valsad) and central Gujarat (Panchmahal, Chhota Udepur, and Kheda) districts.
  • Ahmedabad, which received 219 mm of rain on Sunday night, saw water-logging in many residential areas and flooding in underpasses and roads. Schools and colleges in the city remained closed on Monday.
  • Valsad was one of the worst hit as flooding was seen in some low-lying areas after a rise in the level of Orsang river, IANS reported. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) airlifted 16 people stranded along the flooded banks of the Ambika river.
  • Authorities in the Navsari district are also on alert as the Kaveri and Ambika rivers were flowing above the danger mark.
  • Eighteen platoons each of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed for rescue and relief operations.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel over phone to enquire about the situation and assured all possible help, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a statement.
  • The movement of four passenger trains and an express train was affected after tracks between Chandod and Ekta Nagar sections were washed away, a Western Railway official said.
  • Due to heavy rains, the wall of AUDA Lake in Ahmedabad collapsed, flooding the basement of Vraj Vihar Apartment next to it. The cars parked in the parking lot were seen floating in water. Some cars got stuck in huge potholes in Shahibaug and Shela areas.
  • In Chhota Udepur, many villages were cut off due to floods. More than two hundred people were rescued by the NDRF team with the help of boats. Many villages were cut off due to flooding of rivers, IANS reported.
  • More than 23 flights were delayed up to four hours and two flights were diverted and two flights were cancelled from Ahmedabad airport.
