10-Yr-Old Brings Late Father's Gun To School In Delhi, 'Thought It Was A Toy'

The boy’s mother, who was called to the school by the management, said she had brought out the weapon 'to deposit it at the police station'. Police are now in the process of delicensing it.

A pistol was found in a 10-year-old’s bag at a school in Delhi’s Najafgarh on Saturday. The school administration promptly seized it and reported it to the police. The pistol belonged to the child’s father, who passed away a few months ago. The police are now in the process of delicensing it.

According to PTI, the child thought the pistol was a toy and brought it to school to play with it. The pistol did not have a magazine. 

The boy’s mother, who was called to the school by the management, said she had kept the brought the weapon outside “to deposit it at the police station". When the police verified the pistol’s licence, they saw that it was valid and determined that no cognisable offence was committed. It was deposited by the mother at the police storehouse the same day.

Earlier this month, a Class 8 student was caught with a pistol in his school bag during a routine inspection at a school in the Janjgir Champa district of Chhattisgarh. Following this, the student was taken into custody, while his father and uncle were arrested. The boy told the police that his uncle had bought the gun from Jharkhand and kept it in a cupboard, and he brought it to school, according to The Times Of India. 

Last month, a five-year-old boy carried a gun with him to his school in Bihar and shot at another student, leaving him injured. The incident occurred at St Joseph School in north Bihar's Supaul district on Wednesday. The nursery student had hidden the firearm in his school bag. As he reached school, he opened fire at a 10-year-old boy, who studied in Class 3, during the assembly session around 9 am.

In May, a minor girl died when her brother was playing with a gun and accidentally shot her. The incident occurred in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. According to The Times Of India, the bullet hit the 16-year-old girl in her stomach. Neighbours rushed the girl to a hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival.
