Sunil Gavaskar questions no prize money to Team India after ODI triumph

Veteran Sunil Gavaskar was not quite impressed with the hosts Australia for not honouring the Indian team with any cash award

After managing to win its first ever bilateral ODI series on Australia soil, the Indian cricket team scripted history as Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's heroics with former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's third consecutive half-century anchored India's run chase to defeat Australia by 7 wickets in the final and third ODI. With the 2-1 One-Day International (ODI) series win, India have completed their tour Down Under without losing a series. Yuzvendra Chahal picked up 6-42 as Australia were bowled out for 230 runs (48.4 overs). He matched Ajit Agarkar's 6-42 in 2004 as he recorded the joint best-ever ODI figures on Australian soil. Veteran Sunil Gavaskar was not quite impressed with the hosts Australia for not honouring the Indian team with any cash award. In the post match presentation, Man-of-the-match Yuzvendra Chahal and Man-of-the-series MS Dhoni were given USD 500 each for their brilliant performances in the match. However, the players donated that money to a charity. Gavaskar said that Indian players deserve a share of the revenue they generate. And it’s a pity that they only got a trophy. “What is USD 500 and it’s a pity that the team has got only a trophy. They (organisers) earn so much money through broadcast rights. Why can’t they give good prize money to the players? After all, players are the sole reason for the sport getting huge money (from sponsors),” Gavaskar said on ‘Sony Six’. “Look at the prize money being given away at the Wimbledon (Championships). It’s phenomenal. The players are key in generating money, so they must be rewarded handsomely,” he added.
