Marcus Rashford's Vandalized Mural Repainted And Covered With Heartfelt Messages

EURO 2020: After the penalty shootout an artwork in Withington, Manchester was defaced by some English supporters. That mural has been repainted and repaired now.

Manchester: It was a heartbreaking loss for England as they missed out in the penalties during the final against Italy in Euro 2020 Final. It was more heartbreaking for England striker Marcus Rashford who faced racial abuse for missing a penalty.

Not just Rashford, but Saka and Sancho were also targeted for missing their respective penalties. After the penalty shootout an artwork in Withington, Manchester was defaced by some English supporters. That mural has been repainted and repaired with messages of love and hope for the 23-year-old striker.

Ed Wellard, the co-founder of Withington Walls said that he was disturbed by the news of it and would do everything to get it back in shape. "I've come out to fix what I could immediately and cover up what I couldn't and hopefully we will get the artist out to come and fix it," he said to BBC.

"We dared to dream yesterday and our hopes were dashed but to wake up to this is more depressing. Racism seems to be more and more prevalent," he added.

Wellard is a man of his word as the mural is now back to its original form. Manchester United fans gathered at the mural and wrote some happy messages for their young striker.

This is how it looked when it was vandalised:

Rashford had earlier apologized for missing that penalty kick. "A penalty was all I'd been asked to contribute for the team. I can score penalties in my sleep so why not that one? It's been playing in my head over and over since I struck the ball and there's probably not a word to quite describe how it feels," wrote Rashford.
