IPL 2024 Auction: Who Gets The Player If Franchises End Their Funds On An Equal Bid?

IPL 2024 Auction: There is a rule which is followed in case two franchises are tied with one final bid as they look to get the services of a player and can't go any further, having ended their funds

The Indian Premier League (IPL) Auction is all set to get underway on December 19 in Dubai. While 333 players are expected to go under the hammer in this bidding war, 214 of these players happen to be Indian domestic talents while an addition 119 of them are overseas players. Among the foreigners, two players are from assciate nations. As far as the purse available to franchises are concerned, it is Gujarat Titans (GT) who have the highst remaining purse value with them while Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) find themselves with the lowest money left.

What Is A Silent Tie-Breaker Bid?

While fans and franchises are both eagerly waiting for the IPL 2024 Auction to get underway there is a silent tie-breaker bid which many fans might not be aware of. The silent tie-breaker bid comes into the picture in a rare scenario when two teams are tied on a final bid for a particular player but both are unable to go any further because of lack of funds. In such a case, the two teams whose bids are tied will have to submit a silent written bid on a form and the player with the higher bid gets the player.

However, it should be noted that the money that the franchises promise would be paid by them to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This will the additional amount than the one they had bid for to get the player. This means that the amount that the franchises pay to the BCCI will not in any way impact the salary cap. In case, the bids submitted by the franchises in a form are also tied, the process is repeated until a clear winner.

Instances in Past IPL Auctions When Silent Tie-Breaker Bid Has Been Used

In the IPL 2010 Auction, the silent bid method came into the picture for not one but two players with Kieron Pollard being roped in by Mumbai Indians (MI) and Shane Bond heading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) way. Similarly, Ravindra Jadeja was bagged by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) through this method.
