Who Is Shoaib Bashir? Pakistan-Origin 'Spin Specialist' Called Up By England For ENG vs IND Tests

Shoaib Bashir started his cricket journey at Surrey, moving to Somerset at 17. His first-class debut, at 19, posed him against the legendary Sir Alaistair Cook.

India vs England Test Series 2024: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have unveiled a 16-member squad for the imminent India tour, featuring five Test matches starting January 25. India vs England Test series marks England's first since Stuart Broad's retirement from international cricket and introduces three uncapped players - Gus Atkinson, Tom Hartley, and Shoaib Bashir - in the lineup.

In a squad heavy towards spin, including Rehan Ahmed and the returning Jack Leach, Bashir secured his spot over established names like Liam Dawson. Both Bashir and Tom Hartley were part of England's UAE Camp, where the selectors sought additional spin support for Leach and Ahmed ahead of the Indian challenge.

According to a Guardian report, nine out of 21 camp players specialised in spin bowling or boasted spin-bowling all-rounder skills. Bashir's selection amidst this competition reflects his emergence as an intriguing option for England's India endeavour.

Shoaib Bashir: England's Unfamiliar Weapon in India

Shoaib Bashir started his cricket journey at Surrey, moving to Somerset at 17. His first-class debut, at 19, posed him against the legendary Sir Alaistair Cook. Though wicketless, Bashir impressed observers, troubling the former England captain with his bowling skills. Despite registering 10 wickets in the County season, Bashir's impact transcended mere statistics. The 20-year-old's aspirations for a professional cricket career were evident from his debut match against Essex, expressing his dedication to continuous improvement.

Reflecting on his journey, Bashir expressed, "It's been a mad, mad journey. I've always dreamed about being a professional cricketer. It means the world. I'm going to keep working hard, keep grinding and hopefully maintain this level. There is still a lot to work on," Bashir told The Cricketer during his debut match against Essex. His relentless commitment now sees fruition as he earns a spot in the squad for the India vs England Test series beginning January 25.
