WATCH: The 'Missed Run-out' Chance By Lyon That Ensured England's Victory At Leeds
Some missed run-out chances, a dropped catch and one of the most decisive umpiring howlers in Test history, handed England a memorable win
Australia were just one wicket away from retaining the Ashes before national hero Ben Stokes (135*) produced one of the most remarkable knocks in the history of Test cricket to level the series 1-1 at Leeds. The hosts were all out for 67 in their first innings and it was highly predictable that the visitors would most likely retain the Ashes Urn. However, some missed run-out chances, a dropped catch and one of the most decisive umpiring howlers in Test history, handed England a memorable win.
One such moment was when Aussie senior failed to gather a throw from the fielder when England needed just two runs to win. Much to the joy of England, No. 11 batsman Jack Leach, who had come too far down the pitch after a colossal mix-up, survived. As a result of the fumble, England chased down the target of 359 to register their highest successful chase in Ashes history.
Here's the Video...
Stokes was on fire as he played one of the best innings in the history of Ashes to bring up a ton from 199 balls. The star all-rounder at one point was in such control of the game that he played reverse sweep or switch hit or something equally outrageous and sent it into the stands. This was England's highest successful fourth-innings chase and the tenth highest in Test history. A remarkable victory, which arguably surpassed their 1981 Ashes Test triumph at Headingley when they beat Australia after following-on - saw England level the five-match series at 1-1.Nathan Lyon dropped the #Ashes19?
