Virat Kohli Won’t Have Any Say In Choosing New Head Coach, Claim Reports
The final decision will be taken by the steering committee which is being headed by former India skipper Kapil Dev and approved by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated the selection process of team India’s coaching staff with some strict guidelines. Unlike last time, skipper Virat Kohli will have no say in the selection of the head coach.
According to an Indian Express report, the final decision will be taken by the steering committee which is being headed by former India skipper Kapil Dev and approved by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA).
“Last time, the captain (Kohli) had expressed his difficulty, or the team’s difficulty, with former coach Anil Kumble. In the new selection process, he will have absolutely no say with regards to who becomes the coach. This time, we have Kapil Dev in the coach selection committee, and he will not listen to him (Kohli),” the report quoted a BCCI official as saying.
At the same time, the apex board has also decided that the senior selection committee will also pick the support staff to assist the coach. Normally, the head coach was allowed to do the job. This time, if the head coach is selected before the selection of the support staff, he might join the process, the report stated.
The tenure of Ravi Shastri and his associates – Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun, Sridhar – has come to an end as they were contracted till the 2019 World Cup. However, they have been given a 45-day extension for the West Indies tour that starts on August 3.
The board aims to appoint a new coach before the home series against South Africa starting September 15.
