Virat Kohli's much-anticipated return to Test cricket ended in disappointment as he was dismissed for just 6 runs on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai.

Playing his first home Test since the South Africa series in March 2023, Kohli edged a delivery outside the off-stump, gifting Hasan Mahmud his third wicket of the day. Skipper Rohit Sharma looked visibly frustrated as India struggled early, losing three key wickets in the first session.

IND vs BAN 1st Test, Day 1, 2nd session starts: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant Near 50s

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant are steadying India's innings on Day 1 of first Test against Bangladesh with a promising partnership. Mixing boundaries with smart strike rotation, the pair is keeping the scoreboard moving. Both are approaching their half-centuries as India recovers from early setbacks, reaching 88/3 after 24 overs.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto decided to bowl first after winning the toss. 

"I'd like to bowl first. There's moisture on the wicket and we want to make use of it. The pitch looks hard and there's moisture. The first session will be very good for the seamers. The way we played that series (against Pakistan), we are confident. This is a new series, we'll have to follow our processes. It's a good mixture of experience and youth. We will go with three seamers and two spin allrounders," Shanto said.

India skipper Rohit Sharma said his team would have opted to field first as well if he won the toss.
