Rohit Sharma captained India to their second T20 World Cup victory a few days ago as they defeated South Africa in the T20 WC 2024 final. With the win, India broke an 11-year drought of an ICC championship and 13-year World Cup trophy drought. The World Cup victory saw the whole country of 1.4 billion people celebrating in grand manner. However, amidst all the celebrations, Rohit Sharma finds himself entwined in a controversy that involves the Indian tricolour flag.
Rohit finds himself in a tight spot after he changed his profile picture on social media that showcases him trying to plant the Indian tricolour flag into the ground at the Kensington Oval in Barbados moments after India registered the iconic victory under his leadership.
Social Media Users Criticise Rohit Sharma Over His Profile Picture
Interestingly, his picture gained some negative attention as some social media users expressed their anger because the Indian flag appears to be touching the ground in the picture. Some outraged fans even pointed it out while citing the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 that says “The (Indian) flag shall not be allowed intentionally to touch the ground or the floor or trail in water.”

As much as I love Rohit Sharma, I also think it was a cringe gesture by him, the pole of flag was obviously not tall enough to be fixed in the ground and it kept falling again and again...he should've just waved it around...the flag touching the ground makes it worse.
