Pakistan Players Likely To Be Demoted Or Dropped From Central Contracts After T20 World Cup 2024 Debacle
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are set for a big overhaul after the Babar Azam & Co.'s T20 World Cup 2024 setback.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is all set to go back to its old selection committee system. The decision is being taken after their experiement of having no chief selector did not work out as they would have liked, yielding disastrous results not only in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 but also in the months in the build up to it.
The ultimate result came as a shocker. The Men in Green, who were the finalists of the 2022 edition of the tournament, could not even make it to the Super 8 stage this time around. A stunning defeat to United States of America (USA) followed by a loss against arch-rivals India from a position where they could have won, came back to haunt them as they failed to proceed to the next round of the tournament.
"The board (PCB) is likely to return to the old system of having a chief selector with two or three selectors and the captain and head coach not sitting in selection meetings with the selectors," a source close to the development has told news agency PTI.

While it was Wahab Riaz, who was part of the selection committe that picked the team that featured in the ICC event in the USA, he is likely to be part of the new setup as well and might well be the new chief selector, although there is no official confirmation. Wahab had also been the chief selector before the old system of demolished in which there used to be a three or a four-member national selection committee headed by a chief selector.
As part of the new system, the captain and head coach Babar Azam and Gary Kirsten had selection powers and the two had a data analyst and former cricketers for advice and help. Among the former cricketers was Riaz along with Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq among others.
