IPL GC Meet: Govt Gives Nod For IPL 2020 In UAE, Chinese Sponsors Retained, Covid-19 Replacements Allowed

In another major decision, the council has approved Covid-19 replacements for the tournaments and have set a 24-player limit for each franchise.

The BCCI in its Governing Council meeting of IPL has decided that the 13th edition of the cash-rich league will commence from September 19 to November 10. The BCCI finally got the government's permission for the IPL season 13 to take place outside the country in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The league will include 10 doubleheaders. The evening matches will start at 7:30 p.m. IST. All the games will be played inside a secure bio-bubble with no spectators in the initial phase of the league.

In another major decision, the council has approved Covid-19 replacements for the tournaments and have set a 24-player limit for each franchise. The Indian Premier League's Governing Council also approved the women's IPL.

In June, the skirmish between the armies of India and China in the Galwan Valley along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh sector saw 20 Indian Army personnel lose their lives. After nationwide protests to boycott Chinese companies and products, many reports suggested that the IPL might completely terminate its association with Chinese sponsors. However, the IPL GC on Sunday decided to retain all its sponsors, including Chinese mobile company VIVO.

The IPL has been made possible by the ICC's decision to postpone the October-November T20 World Cup in Australia owing to the COVID-19 pandemic due to which the host country expressed its inability to conduct the event.
