Background
India registered a thrilling 2-run win over Sri Lanka in the first of three-match T20I Series at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. While the action now shifts to the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, Team India will look to clinch yet another bilateral T20I Series when they take the field on December 5 (Thursday).
Team India have been handed a blow as Sanju Samson has been ruled out of the remainder of the series and it would be interesting to see who replaces him in the Playing 11. Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel and Ishan Kishan were the stars for the Men in Blue with the bat in the series opener in Mumbai as the Hardik Pandya-led side posted 162/5 after being asked to bat first by Sri Lanka.
In Sri Lanka's run chase, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga and Chamika Karunaratne tried hard but eventually the hosts prevailed. Debutant Shivam Mavi shone with the ball for the home team as he scalped 4 wickets for 22 runs. Umran Malik (2/27) and Harshal Patel (2/41) were the other wicket takers for Team India.
For the Men from the Island Nation, Wanindu Hasaranga's all-round effort and Maheesh Theekshana's spell were great positives other than captain Dasun Shanaka's quickfire 45 off 27. They would be aware that they came close to stunning India who start any home series against any opposition as the favourites.
Eventually, it was a matter of one more big shot, or boundary which had Sri Lanka found anywhere during the course of their innings, they would have been on the winning side. On the other hand, India would want to view it as a win, which doesn't matter how it comes in sport, is a win at the end of the day.
Having said that, there is tremendous scope of improvement even in the winning side of the 1st T20I. The hosts have their own vulnerabilities that can get exposed if Sri Lanka manage to ask the right questions.
All in all, an exciting game of cricket awaits us.
