Black Socks Might Land Shubman Gill In Trouble - Here's Why

On Day 1 of the Leeds Test, Shubman Gill was spotted wearing black socks — a breach of the traditional dress code in Test cricket, which requires players to wear white socks.

India has kicked off a five-match Test series against England under the captaincy of Shubman Gill. The first Test began on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds, and Day 1 saw a commanding performance from the Indian batters.

Both Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored centuries, with Jaiswal dismissed for 101 and Gill unbeaten on 127 at stumps.

However, amid the celebrations, Gill finds himself under scrutiny for an off-field issue that could lead to disciplinary action.

Gill Faces Possible ICC Sanction

On Day 1 of the Leeds Test, Shubman Gill was spotted wearing black socks — a breach of the traditional dress code in Test cricket, which requires players to wear white socks.

The rule, introduced by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and enforced by the ICC, is part of cricket’s long-standing uniform regulations.

Images of Gill’s black socks have gone viral on social media, prompting discussions around a potential fine. While the ICC has not issued an official statement yet, a violation of dress code norms typically draws sanctions, even if minor.

Captaincy Debut Century Adds to Gill’s Growing Legacy

Despite the controversy, Gill made an impressive start to his tenure as Test captain. His unbeaten 127 marked a memorable debut in the role and placed him among a select group of Indian players — including Virat Kohli — to score a century in their first match as Test skipper.

He also crossed the 2,000-run mark in Test cricket during his innings, cementing his rising stature in the longest format.

By the end of Day 1, India had reached a strong total of 359 for 3. KL Rahul (42), Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), and debutant Sai Sudharsan (0) were the three wickets to fall. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant contributed a brisk 65* and will resume his innings on Day 2 alongside Gill.

As India looks to build further on their solid foundation, all eyes will also be on whether the ICC responds to the uniform violation — a minor misstep in an otherwise flawless day for the young captain.
