Did England Disrespect Sachin Tendulkar? Gavaskar Raises Serious Question

As the Test battle intensifies, the off-field debate over the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ensures that this series will be remembered for more than just the cricket.

The iconic Test series between India and England has been renamed the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, replacing the Pataudi Trophy. While the new title aims to honour two of the game’s greats — James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar — the move has stirred controversy, with several former players and fans questioning the decision, particularly the naming order.

Gavaskar Expresses Discontent

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has voiced his displeasure over the naming convention. Speaking to Mid-Day, Gavaskar said: “It should have been called the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. It’s disappointing to see Anderson’s name appear first. Anderson is a great bowler, but he ranks third on the all-time wicket-takers list and has primarily excelled in English conditions. Tendulkar, on the other hand, is a world champion with an all-format, all-condition record. His impact on global cricket is far greater.”

Gavaskar's remarks have reignited the debate, with many fans viewing the decision as a slight to Tendulkar, often referred to as the ‘God of Cricket.’

Pataudi Medal Still Remains

Despite the change in series name, the Pataudi Medal will continue to be awarded to the winning team’s captain, preserving a part of the original tradition.

IND vs ENG Series Heats Up at Headingley

Meanwhile, the action on the field remains evenly poised. In the first Test at Headingley, India posted 471 runs in their first innings, with England replying strongly with 465. India reached 90/2 in their second innings by the end of Day 3, holding an overall lead of 96 runs.

As the ongoing India vs England Test battle intensifies, the off-field debate over the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ensures that this series will be remembered for more than just the cricket.
