IND vs BAN, Asia Cup 2023: Bangladesh Beat India By 6 Runs To End Campaign On High
Asia Cup 2023: Bangladesh beat India in their final match of the tournament. India and Sri Lanka will meet in the final on Sunday.
Bangladesh beat Bangladesh by 6 runs in an absolute thriller of a match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday (September 15). In what was the final match of the Super Four stage of the continental tournament, the result of which had no impact on the final lineup with both Sri Lanka and India having sealed a place in the summit clash, India decided to bowl first. After being reduced to 59/4, a partnership between Shakib Al Hasan (80 off 85) and Towhid Hridoy (54 off 81) helped them revive their innings as they eventually posted 265/8.
In response, India lost early wickets but Shubman Gill held his end up and responded with a fine century (121). However, Bangladesh continued to take wickets and eventually find a way to get past Gill with the required run rate mounting. Axar Patel showed some fight with the bat scoring 42 off 34 but got out in the penultimate over of the match. With 12 needed of 6 balls, Mohammed Shami did manage to find a boundary but got run out in an attempt to get back on strike for the final ball, ending India's innings at 259.
Shakib was adjudged the Player of the match for his all-round contribution as he scalped 1 for 43 after his invaulable contribution with the bat. Debutant Tanzim Hasan Sakib also had a game to remember as he sent back Rohit Sharma for a two-ball duck before also picking the wicket of Tilak Varma. He returned to defend 12 off the last over although it helped that India had just one wicket remaining. The result means India's unbeaten run in the continental tournament ends before they play the final at the same venue on Sunday (September 17).
Bangladesh, meanwhile, managed to end their campaign on a high registering their solitary win of the Super 12 stage after succumbing to a defeat against Pakistan and Sri Lanka earlier.
