IND vs AUS, 2nd ODI: Shreyas Iyer Gets His Form Back, Hits Brilliant Century

Iyer got this fifty in 41 balls and then took the top gear from there on.

India’s middle order batter Shreyas Iyer regained his form with a terrific century in the second ODI against Australia on Sunday at Indore. Alongside playing with Shubman Gill, Iyer smashed a brilliant century after coming from a 6-month long injury. Earlier in 2023, Iyer sustained a back injury that resulted in nerve compression and a slipped disc. He was in extreme pain after sustaining an injury and asa. Result, he had to take his name back from the World Test Championship final and the Asia Cup Super-4 match against Pakistan and other crucial games.

Iyer’s recovery process was tough and involved a lot of injections and he even went on to have surgery. After going through a difficult rehab, Iyer made a comeback in the recently passed Asia Cup 2023 opener. But again he sustained a back spasm and missed out on playing the India-Pakistan Super Four match.

Coming to play the three-match ODI series against Australia, Iyer got run out in the first match at Mohali. But in the ongoing second ODI, Iyer came out to bat after Gaikwad departed and went on to build a 200-run partnership for the third wicket with Gill. Iyer departed after scoring 105 runs in just 90 balls with the help of 11 fours and 3 sixes. This was his 3rd century in ODI cricket. Iyer got this fifty in 41 balls and then took the top gear from there on. Iyer won the race as he scored a century before Gill.

During the innings break, Shreyas Iyer said, “My focus was on cramps, wasn't allowing me to hold firm. I was almost out caught and bowled, I realised my top hand wasn't working. After that, I was trying to smash every ball, I felt that I got the team in the right place. I was happy throughout the innings. My mindset was to play the ball in the V. I wanted to time it. I was experiencing variable bounce. Thankfully we were able to take that momentum towards our side”.
