Happy Birthday Herschelle Gibbs: Before Yuvraj, There Was Gibbs | Watch And Relive Six Sixes By The Mighty South African

On the 47th birthday of the great Herschelle Gibbs, we look at the time when the SA batsman became the first man to hit six sixes in an over. Watch video below.

On March 16, 2007 Herschelle Gibbs became the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over in a 50-over match. The match was a World Cup game against Netherlands. Due to rainfall, the match was reduced to 40 overs per side. South Africa lost AB de Villiers on the second ball of the innings, but that was not the sign of things to come for Netherlands. But Herschelle Gibbs won the man of the match despite Kallis scoring a quick-fire 128 runs and why wouldn’t he? He made history that day as he struck Daan van Bunge for 36 in one over, which means he hit van Bunge for six maximums in one over. Van Bunge came on to bowl at Gibbs in the 30^th over. He was a leg-break bowler but little did he know that he is going to remember this 30^th over for the rest of his life, for all the wrong reasons.

Gibbs played 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20Is for South Africa before taking retirement in 2010 from all forms of international cricket. He was an essential part of the 2009 IPL winning Deccan Chargers side. He also went on to play for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

Gibbs will always be remembered as the first man to clear the boundary six times in an over in an international game.
